Availability for sightseeing in the National Reserve is primarily the summer months of May through August. The surrounding area of Alaska's Lake Clark
Inn offers astounding variety of wildlife. Keep an eye out for moose, beaver, lynx, bear, coyote, wolverines, fox, porcupines and waterfowl. There are more than 125 bird species to be found around and above the park, including peregrine falcon, ptarmigan, and a large variety of waterfowl.
Sightseeing can be done in a variety of ways. Take a scenic trip by plane. Kayak all or part of the 70-mile Chilikadrotna River, a narrow, twisting river with beautiful views, swift rocky flows, and plenty of sweepers.This breathtaking National Wild and Scenic River cascades down the west side of the Alaska Range and flows through gentle upland forests of spruce, aspen, and birch.
Take a trek across Tundra. There are countless hiking opportunities. Hike to view the Tanalian Falls.
Along the way watch for Beaver dams and other wildlife.
Hike into the back country to view glacial valleys, tundra foothills and river gravel bars.
Take an overnight hike to the Twin Lakes. Brush-covered slopes that lead to open ridge tops provide good opportunities to spot caribou, red fox, and white sheep. The hike is moderately difficult, but the scenery is unsurpassed. Jagged peaks of the Chigmit Mountains stand behind green forests and fields of wildflowers here at the head of the Chilikadrotna River. Back country permits are not needed.
